Canadian Environment Week is from May 31st to June 6th 2009. It's the perfect time to celebrate our achievements and initiatives in tackling climate change and reducing air pollution. You can work on simple changes that contribute to a greener future for everyone.

Here are a few tips to green your lifestyle:

• Buy locally grown food. Take some time to visit local Farmers Markets and learn more about the benefits of choosing locally grown foods! 
• Change at least one light bulb to a compact fluorescent. Those qualified to ENERGY STAR® use about a quarter as much electricity as a conventional light bulb to produce the same amount of light. Compact fluorescents cost a bit more than incandescents, but they last up to ten times longer. 
• Take a walk on the wild side. Go for a day hike on a local nature trail and revel in the beauty and serenity you're trying to preserve for future generations.
• Turn off your computer when you're not using it. A home computer, monitor, and printer can use up to 200 watts of electricity. At both work and home, set your monitor to go into "sleep" mode if it is idle for more than 5 minutes, and your computer to do the same after 15.
• Carry a cloth bag or keep one in your car. Avoid traditional plastic bags in favour of reusable totes. Most plastic bags wind up in landfill sites, where they can take up to a thousand years to biodegrade. A cloth tote is durable, easy to carry and much more eco-friendly!
  

The following tips show you how to be more energy efficient and save money while reducing the risks of global warming.

1. Replace your five most frequent used light fixtures with CFL bulbs. Turning off one incandescent bulb can save $15 per year.
2. If you are in the market for an air conditioner, consider an ENERGY STAR model
3. Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature settings when you are sleeping or are away.
4. Many consumer electronics products use energy even when switched off. Electronics equipment that has earned the ENERGY STAR helps save energy when off. Phantom power can use up 30 to 40 watts.
5. A ten minute shower can use less water than a full bath. Install a low-flow shower head which saves water and energy. It can save 5 gallons of water and $145 on electricity per year.
6. Make sure hot air can circulate freely and air registers aren't blocked by furniture.
7. During the colder months, take in the Sun's warmth by keeping drapes open in the daylight hours and close them to keep out the summer heat.
8. Before loading in the dishwasher, save water by scraping dishes instead of rinsing them. Run the dishwasher with a full-load and use the air-dry option.
9. Use cold water when doing laundry and wash full-loads if you can. If you do need to do a partial load, adjust the water level to match the load.
10. Don't over dry your clothes. Clean the lint trap before every load. Dry full loads, or reduce drying time for partial loads.

With the New Year approaching rapidly, people may be thinking about resolution ideas, some of which may be to do something positive for the planet. The majority of us know the basics of carpooling, recycling and using CFL bulbs. Here are a few more from our good friend Chris Whitney of Royal LePage.

Single Serving Kettle

Try the new single serve kettle models that boil water for a single cup. If you need to heat water for yourself for a cup of coffee, tea, or soup, these models save energy. It uses the same technology that makes hot water in a drip cofeemaker.

Solar Powered Roof Ventilator

Install solar-powered fans in the attic which remove the hot air that builds up in the attic. This will keep the home cooler in the summer months and reduce your air-conditioning bill and save energy at the same time.

Biodegradable Party Plates and Cutlery

If you are throwing a party, consider biodegradable cutlery that is compostable. Since they are made from organic materials such as corn and not plastic, they can also be used in the microwave. When you are done with them, simply throw them in the compost bin. If you can't have a compost, it may be a good time to start using compost pick up services; Cherry Hill Coffee has a partnership with a local company that does weekly compost pickup.

 

According to BC Hydro, British Columbia is high on the list in North America in the use of CFL bulbs. 85% have installed the energy-efficient light bulbs which uses 75% less electricity than the regular bulbs.

BC Hydro is offering rebates from now till the end of the year and it's a great time to take advantage of it. They are offering $50 off washers and refrigerators and $25 off of freezers. All appliances must be Energy Star compliant. Retailers are doing their part to support BC Hydro PowerSmart by taking an additional 10% off. In some months, you can save both the PST and GST.

If you are buying a new laundry set, consider a front load washer which uses 35% less energy and 30-50% less water then a top-load. Also, consider using cold water to do your wash. Bypass the dryer by using a clothesline in the hotter months and use racks (get chrome instead of wood) in the laundry room in the colder months. If you are using a clothesline, consider stringing it over a flower garden to get the flowery smell in your clothes.

When you are doing dishes in the dishwasher, run the kitchen tap till the water is hot then turn on the dishwasher. This helps the dishwasher by not needing it to heat the water as much.

Try unplugging electronics or turning off the power bar when they are not in use. Even when they are off and plugged in, they use electricity - phantom electricity.

The quick tips listed above should make a difference in your next electricity bill.

What is the Cool Shops program?

It's a program put together by FortisBC, Terasen Gas, and the City of Kelowna, in partnership with the Clean Air Foundation that helps small businesses conserve energy, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by identifying and implementing in-store energy management measures.

Through their efforts, they've helped 8,000 retailers become more energy efficient and 5,073 megawatt hours and 1,532 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions have been saved.

Case Study

Olympia Greek Taverna recently switched to a high efficiency pre-rinse spray valve which will reduce their hot water consumption by 2/3s. That’s a saving of between $400—$800 a year.

Also, the owner's found out that through the Cool Shops program that they have the potential to save approximately $1,400 per year if they upgrade their incandescent and fluorescent lights to more efficient lighting.

Replace your light bulbs to help yourself and your environment

We have all heard the buzz about replacing our incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) but often we are turned away by the price tag or don't have enough information to make an informed decision.

I'd like to point out some facts and figures that may sway you now:

• compact fluorescent lights use 75% less energy
• the CFL bulbs last 10 times longer than incandescents
• they save up to $30 in electricity per light over their lifetime.
• a 20 watt CFL bulb gives off the same amount of light as a 100 watt incandescent
• FortisBC PowerSense offers a rebate of 50% of the cost for each bulb purchased (to a maximum of $5.00 per bulb)

If households replaced just a few incandescent bulbs with a compact fluorescent, the emissions savings would be comparable to taking cars off the road for periods of time. We all need cars, but to compensate, we could replace our light bulbs.

On the downside, fluorescent lights contain small amounts of mercury and must be disposed of in a responsible manner. Rona has taken an initiative to recycle your compact flourescent bulbs as a part of their program to promote respect for the environment.
