Preserve Toothbrush

The Preserve toothbrush comes with a handle made from 100% recycled yoghurt cups and new nylon bristles. It is also 100% recyclable.

If there are no recycling facilities in your area, you can send the used toothbrush back and they will pass it on to a company that will make plastic lumber out of it.

I purchased mine in the USA on vacation but they are available to order online or at Wholefoods in Vancouver. There are three different bristles to choose from and a wide variety of colors.

Another great feature is that it is sold in a reusable plastic travel case.

The Biodegradable Potty

Here is a new way to be environmentally friendly during potty training. The becopotty is made from bamboo and rice husk waste.

The company Becothings takes the waste material and makes it into a simple but stylish potty that will last for years.  At the end of potty training, the becopotty can be planted in the garden and will biodegrade within a few years.

Unlike most potties on the market, this one is eco friendly and plastic free!  Buy it in Canada at Ecobotts.

Recycle Glass Week

It is recycle glass week September 21-27.  Glass is continuously recyclable and just by recycling one bottle you save enough energy to run your computer for twenty minutes.  A quick reminder that it takes over 4000 years for glass to decompose.

Although glass does not go into the Blue Bins in Kelowna, it can be dropped off at the bottle depot on Pandosy.

Lalabee Bathworks has started using recyclable blue glass bottles for some of their products as an alternative to plastic.

All Natural Lip Moisturizer

Sun care for lips is often overlooked.  We hear so much about sunscreen, hats and sunglasses and tend to forget that our lips get a lot of sun exposure.  Not using an SPF balm can lead to lip cancer and make our lips more prone to aging, yikes!

Lip gloss is especially bad at attracting sunlight.  With this in mind I picked up an SPF 15 lip moisturizer from a leading company.  After removing the fancy packing when I got home, the words ‘Warning: If swallowed contact a poison control center right away’ certainly got my attention.  Needless to say I didn’t use it and found some Badger lip balm at Nature’s Fare.  It is a natural, chemical free SPF 15 lip balm that is safe for children too.

Whatever you decide to choose, please check the label!

Phthalates warning

Health Canada proposed a ban last month on six different phthalates in children's soft toys. A fantastic move, since phthalates are known to cause reproductive harm. They are already banned in such things as soothers but not in something like the yellow rubber ducky, a staple for almost every bath including our own.

Once I removed the two rubber duckies from our tub and everything else that looked like it was possibly made from soft vinyl, I decided to just ban plastic bath toys altogether.

It took me awhile to come up with some alternatives. I did find a phthalate free duck, made from natural rubber with non-toxic paint and decided on some biodegradable sea sponges for the squish factor. Along with organic cotton wash mits and empty shampoo bottles, we are making out just fine.

Sun Protection for Kids

Summer is officially here and it is great to see so many families out enjoying the sunshine.  It always brings up the yearly reminder for sun protection, especially for children. Even one blistering sunscreen can increase a child’s risk of developing skin cancer and most sun damage occurs before age eighteen.

The Slip-Slop-Slap campaign has been underway for awhile now and since it is almost impossible to put sunscreen on a squirming toddler, I find the easiest way to ‘Slip’ on sunscreen is buy using a sun suit. My latest find was a local company that makes cute sun suits for kids.

My two year old picked out a blue Luv Bug creation and has been wearing it the last few weeks. I have to say, she loved it so much it doubled as pajamas for a few days. The added bonus is that the fabric is environmentally friendly (no harsh chemicals) and biodegradable. Some of the other characteristics are that its anti-bacterial, non-toxic and breathable.

The Natural Baby Shop in town also has a wide variety of No Zone sun suits for kids. This is our third summer using sun suits and so far I am happy to say we haven’t had a sunburn.  Of course, the idea is to keep our children safe from the sun and doing what works best for us individually. Now my quest for a hat she’ll keep on her head!

Company Profile - Lalabee Bathworks

Lalabee Bathworks is a local company that handcrafts organic skincare for Mommy & Baby. All our products are made in Kelowna using only certified organic and natural ingredients, bought from local farms and suppliers as much as possible.

We started off in 2007 as Lalabee Baby, offering affordable organic alternatives to infant skincare. Our Bottom Balm (for diaper rash and eczema) is still our best selling product.  A few months later we added our organic Mommy Line, as there was a definite gap in the market for Canadian made organic skincare for Moms.

Lalabee Bathworks strives to be environmentally responsible by not using plastic containers for our products, recycling all our packaging and donating to Heifer International.  Plus we use as many organic ingredients as possible.  You can find our skincare in over fifty stores across Canada and locally at The Natural Baby Shop, Choices Market and Tidy Tushees.
