Sustainability Symposium @ TRU

On November 19, 20 and 21 Thomson Rivers University is hosting the "Awakening the Dreamer" Sustainability Symposium! Click here to see the site!

Through dynamic group interactions, leading edge information, and inspiring multimedia, participants of this half-day event are inspired to reconnect with their deep concern for our world, and are empowered to make a difference.

It is an exploration of four questions

Where Are We? – an examination of the state of environmental, social and personal well-being
How did We Get Here? – tracing the root causes that lead to our current imbalance
What’s Possible for the Future? – discovering new ways of relating with each other, with the Earth and looking at the emerging Movement for change
Where Do We Go from Here? – considering the stand we want to be in the world and our personal and collective impact

Registration cost for the weekend is $25 plus $100 for workshops on hosting symposiums. This is also a great opportunity for us to see what other campuses are doing and how we can get our campus more involved! Scholarships are available for this conference and car-pooling options are available!

Smart Grid and The Cities: Who Wins?

A Complimentary Live Video Webinar

Featuring Matthew Kahn, author of Climatopolis: How Our Cities Will Thrive in the Hotter Future

Wednesday, October 13, 2010
3:00 – 4:00 p.m. EST

The promise of Smart Grid technology is generating much buzz. Futurists say the technology is realistic.

It will empower consumers to slash their energy bills. It will decrease our collective demand for electricity, so fewer new power plants will be built. We won't see utilities using “dirty” energy to meet demand at peak times. Environmental rewards will include lower greenhouse gas emissions and local ambient emissions.

But will all cities gain equally from the coming Smart Grid revolution? What will distinguish those who win from those who don't?

Join Harvard Business Review for an interactive discussion with Matthew Kahn, author of the new book Climatopolis: How Our Cities Will Thrive in the Hotter Future. On October 13, he shares his views on the less-anticipated effects of Smart Grid technology, examined through an urban lens.

shorter the shift.

This is a fun activity that draws a lot of attention to the courtyard. Everyone who participates enjoys it and is
always surprised at what they find in the trash.

National Sustainable Campuses Conference

The weekend of October 1-3, 2010 will see students from across Canada coming together to mobilize for improved sustainability of their university and college campuses.

A Sierra Youth Coalition (SYC) initiative, the 12th Annual National Sustainable Campuses Conference will be held this year at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in partnership with the Alma Mater Society.

As students, we can involve ourselves in a world outside of academics by engaging in campus life and our local community. As student leaders, we can draw on our experiences in these realms to advance a movement towards campuses that are environmentally friendly and better integrated in our wider community.

Stay tuned for more information about speakers and registration!

Green Drinks Thurs June 3 @ Doc's

Just a reminder that Green Drinks, Kelowna’s only sustainability networking event, is taking place Thursday, June 3 from 5-7pm at Doc Willoughby’s pub.  Come on out and meet, mingle, and network with a lively mixture of sustainability-minded people.  Don't forget to bring your business cards and pamphlets.

We have two sponsors this month Green City Acres (Curtis Stone) and Spirit in the Raw (Sandra Butler).  Both of our sponsors will be bringing samples of their products for us to try!!

Green City Acres is a pedal powered urban farming/edible landscaping company dedicated to sustainable food production. They utilize back yards and urban spaces to grow organic produce for local distribution. All of their farming operations including farm maintenance, transportation of crops, restaurant deliveries, weekly farmers markets, and moving of our 300 lb. rototiller, are all done with their bikes and trailers. Their mission is to foster social and environmental change through the production of local organic food, with minimal use of fossil fuels, and to help, teach, and empower people to start growing their own.

Spirit in the Raw was started by Sandra Butler when she realized that she was getting older but not healthier.  She began seeking new ways to lower her blood pressure and cholesterol and sought out and discovered that life with Raw Food satisfied and inspired her to health.  "Raw food" means a diet made up of raw fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains, nuts, and seeds.  Edible flowers, mushrooms, sea vegetables, cold-pressed oils, fermented foods and natural sweeteners such as agave nectar and raw honey are also used by raw food enthusiasts.  Raw food also means that nothing is heated or processed above a temperature of 46C.  Sandra in a Certified Raw Chef and she will be sharing some of her Raw Food cuisine with us.

Our sponsor this month is Full Spectrum Leadership (Doug Cameron & Peter Comrie).  For over forty years the principles and practices of Full Spectrum Leadership have been taught by luminaries such as Alexander Everett, Werner Erhard, Buckminster Fuller, and Jim Quinn. Their development of leaders goes unparalleled still today.

To that end, two significant organizations have combined to introduce Full Spectrum Leadership Training to the next generation of 21st Century leaders. Doug Cameron, the co-founder of The Eppica Centre, and one of the rare individuals personally mentored by the late Jim Quinn, invited Peter Comrie of The Wealthy Attitude to join forces to develop a training circumstance that would significantly impact 1000 of this new decades leaders.
